Azerbaijan appeals to UN over Sumgayit unrest

The Azerbaijani government has addressed a letter to the UN Security Council and General Assembly regarding the Sumgayit events.

The Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs shared a post on Twitter.

'The official investigation established that the Sumgayit unrest in February 1988 had been a well-prepared provocation masterminded by Armenian extremist organizations to discredit Azerbaijan and cover up Armenia's unlawful annexationist intentions,' the letter says.

Permanent Representative of Azerbaijan to the United Nations Yashar Aliyev presented the document to the UN General Assembly.

As a result of the bloody scenario carried out in Sumgayit on February 27-29, 1988, overall 32 Azerbaijani citizens, including 6 Azerbaijanis and 26 Armenians, were murdered. Moreover, hundreds of apartments were robbed, and more than 50 cultural-household facilities were destroyed.
