American expert comments on Karabakh meetings in Washington

The planned meetings of US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo with the Foreign Ministers of Azerbaijan and Armenia on October 23 in Washington aim to improve the Trump administration's international image. They are unlikely to bring any significant results.

US political scientist, Professor at the University of Marquette (Wisconsin) Peter Tase, told Report.

"When the Armenian forces are retreating, Secretary Pompeo suddenly wakes up and invites Foreign Minister of the Republic of Azerbaijan Jeyhun Bayramov to a meeting in Washington. Pompeo will also meet separately with the Armenian Foreign Minister. This Caucasian visit targets to enhance the international image of the Trump administration and emphasize its geopolitical position in the world."

According to the expert, the upcoming meetings in Washington on October 23 are "doomed to failure" in advance: "Moreover, they can give more time to the Armenian side, which continues to shell Azerbaijani cities, killing Azerbaijani children, women, innocent civilians, violating international law."

Besides, the expert believes that the upcoming Washington meetings' objective is to level Russia's influence in the region.

"The diplomatic influence of the US and the position of the Secretary of State Pompeo's double standards confirm the fact that the process of the OSCE Minsk group is outdated. Therefore, nothing positive is expected from the upcoming meetings in Washington. This event will only help Armenia gain more time and ensure political legitimacy for the Yerevan terrorists Nikol Pashinyan and others, who were to be declared persona non grata by the State Department and key European diplomatic offices."
