Azerbaijan and Iran discuss border checkpoint capacity

Azerbaijan and Iran have discussed possibilities for expanding the capacity of border checkpoints.

Report informs, citing Azerbaijan's Land Transport Agency (AYNA), that the discussions were held during the visit of the representatives of the State Customs Committee to the Julfa and Shakhtakhti border checkpoints, as well as Iran's Julfa and Poldash checkpoints.

The meetings addressed rules for receiving and inspecting cargo transport, queue organization, and document processing at checkpoints. Responsible parties exchanged views on checkpoint capabilities and international transportation regulations.

The Azerbaijani side pointed out difficulties faced by carriers in Iran, including regular inspections that slow down vehicle passage. It was noted that Azerbaijan's Julfa and Shakhtakhti checkpoints use X-ray equipment and an automated AI-based risk analysis system, which speeds up inspections. Meanwhile, it was noted that Iranian checkpoints in Julfa and Poldash lack X-ray devices. The Iranian side reported plans to install such equipment. It was also emphasized that reduced working hours and night breaks on the Iranian side decrease throughput capacity. The parties agreed to review work schedules. After addressing these issues, Shakhtakhti will be able to process 150-200 trucks, and Julfa will process 200-250 trucks daily in one direction.
