Gazakh landmine explosion leaves two with life-altering injuries

Two people suffered severe injuries when a landmine exploded in the village of Gizilhajili, located in the Gazakh district of Azerbaijan.

The blast victims, identified as warrant officer Hayal Edirnagulu oglu Ahadli from the State Border Service and Afig Mushvig oglu Mehdizada, an employee of the Azerbaijan National Agency for Mine Action (ANAMA), underwent emergency surgeries that resulted in the amputation of their feet.

A mine explosion occurred in the village of Gizilhajili, located in Azerbaijan’s Gazakh district.

According to Report, the General Prosecutor’s Office of Azerbaijan, the State Border Service, and the Azerbaijan National Agency for Mine Action (ANAMA) issued a joint statement regarding the incident.

It was noted that on August 2, mines planted by Armenia exploded in the village of Gizilhajili, Gazakh district, which was returned to Azerbaijan following an agreement on April 19, 2024, concerning the delimitation of the Azerbaijan-Armenia border.

The explosion resulted in injuries to Ensign Ahadli Khayal Adinagulu oghlu, a military employee of the State Border Service, and Mehdizada Afig Mushvig oghlu, an ANAMA employee. Both sustained leg injuries from an anti-personnel mine while performing demining duties.

Additionally, ANAMA employees Alakbarov Elchin Ilham oghlu and Mirzayev Yavar Garay oghlu suffered shrapnel wounds.

The injured were promptly taken to the hospital for first aid, and their lives are not in danger, according to the report.

Currently, employees from the Shamkir military and Gazakh District Prosecutor’s Office are examining the scene with the participation of a prosecutor-criminologist, and other necessary procedural actions are being carried out. The prosecutor’s office is investigating the incident.
