Representatives of Azerbaijan's Prosecutor General's Office have participated in the 15th United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, Report informs.
According to the Prosecutor General's Office, as part of the Azerbaijani delegation, Vugar Aliyev, head of the Office for Coordination of Special Confiscation Issues, and Babak Zakirzada, deputy head of the Department for International Legal Cooperation, participated in the congress from September 26 to 28.
The event addressed issues related to combating new and emerging forms of crime, preventing organized crime, improving criminal justice systems, applying modern technologies and strengthening international cooperation.
On September 27, a high-level special event titled "Overcoming Environmental Crime: From Promises to Tangible Results" was held as part of the congress. The event was organized by the UAE Ministry of Interior, jointly with the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and Azerbaijan's Prosecutor General's Office.
The panel included UNODC Executive Director Monica Juma, INTERPOL Director Lucas Philippe, French Justice Minister Gerard Darmanin and Dana Al Marzouqi, Director General at the UAE Ministry of Interior.
Participants discussed challenges in combating organized crime and corruption affecting the environment, wildlife crime, forest crime, illegal mining, illicit waste trafficking, pollution and fisheries-related crime. They emphasized the importance of coordinated law enforcement efforts, operational cooperation, and the exchange of best practices and information.
Speaking at the event, Vugar Aliyev noted the transnational nature of environmental crimes and stressed the importance of expanding practical cooperation between states and international organizations, coordinating law enforcement activities and making effective use of modern technologies.
The event concluded with the presentation of the Abu Dhabi Call to Action on Environmental Crime 2026. The voluntary initiative seeks to promote the prevention of and fight against environmental crime as a shared international priority and further expand cooperation among states, international and regional organizations, law enforcement agencies and other partners.
