Ecuador president: Assange will not be extracted to any country where he can face death penalty - UPDATED

Ecuador’s president said Assange would not be extradited to any country where he could face “torture or the death penalty.”

“I asked Great Britain the guarantee that Mr Assange will not be extradited to any country in which he could suffer torture or face the death penalty,” President Moreno said in a video message posted on social media, Report informs citing Asia Times.

“The British government has confirmed this in writing," Moreno added.

“In a sovereign decision Ecuador withdrew the asylum status to Julian Assange after his repeated violations to international conventions and daily-life protocols," President of Ecuador Lenín Moreno has tweeted.

Earlier, Assange was arrested in central London.
