UK Ambassador to Azerbaijan comments on preliminary elections results

“At the moment the results show that conservative party will win majority of seats in the parliament," the UK Ambassador to Azerbaijan, James Sharp told Report, commenting on the elections held in Britain.

“This will be a gain because previously they did not have a majority. So it is clear that being a majority they will push parliament to vote for the withdrawal agreement, Brexit agreement. And it means that the UK will leave the European Union by January 31", the Ambassador said.

"If they have majority of seats then parliament has to agree to a withdrawal agreement. We assume that they will agree with that," the Ambassador added.

Speaking about how relations with Azerbaijan will develop after the Brexit, whether there may be some changes, the ambassador said:

"Our relationship with Azerbaijan is not based on our membership with the European Union. We have strong bilateral relationship and that relationship will continue."
