According to the latest estimates, the agricultural sector accounts for 8 million tons or 12.8% of the 62.4 million tons of waste released into the atmosphere in Azerbaijan, Deputy Minister of Agriculture Sarvan Jafarov said at the opening ceremony of Azerbaijan International Agriculture Caspian Agro and 29th Azerbaijan International Food Industry InterFood Azerbaijan exhibitions, Report informs.
According to him, the agricultural sector is not only affected by the results of climate change but also has a certain share in the emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.
“With this indicator, the agricultural sector is in second place after the energy category in the total share of the greenhouse gases released in country. In general, as the Ministry of Agriculture, we support global calls in this field by being sensitive to environmental issues. Thus, in order to minimize the effects of climate change in the agricultural sector and to assess climate risks in the organization of activities, the Ministry has prepared a Strategy Plan by promoting the country's policy in the direction of adapting to climate change (adaptation) and mitigating the effects (mitigation) based on international experiences,” the deputy minister said.
