Mukhtar Babayev: Growing demand for food raises pressure on water and land resources

The production capacity of water and land resources in the world barely meets current demand, Azerbaijani Presidential Representative on Climate Issues Mukhtar Babayev said at the 4th Agribusiness Development Forum held in Baku, Report informs.
"Agriculture is a strategically important sector that provides basic human needs. The growing demand for food is raising pressure on water and land resources. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, approximately 1.7 billion hectares of land worldwide have been degraded by human activities. More than 60% of this land is cropland and pasture used for agriculture," Babayev said.
