The European Commission has decided to allocate to Moldova, through the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), a grant of 7.8 million euros to repair the access road to the Giurgiulesti checkpoint, which is one of the key road checkpoints on the way from Ukraine to Romanian ports, according to the Moldovan agency Moldpres, Report informs referring to Interfax.
In October 2023, the Ukrainian leadership announced the creation of a new “grain corridor” through Moldova and Romania. The transport corridor connects the checkpoint Reni (Ukraine) - Giurgiulesti (Moldova) - Galati (Romania). At the beginning of this year, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development of Moldova submitted an application to CEF for the repair of the access road to the checkpoint and the construction of a bypass road for the village of Giurgiulesti with parking equipment for trucks.
Currently, the road, which is more than 3 km long, “is in a deplorable state”; it will be expanded to four lanes and repaired to European standards. The total cost of the project is 15.57 million euros, 50% of the cost will be covered by the European Union through the CEF.
