Azerbaijan proposes joint management scenarios for transboundary rivers

Azerbaijan proposed the development of joint management mechanisms and application scenarios for transboundary rivers in the country, said Rafig Verdiyev, Deputy Director of the Environmental Policy Department at Azerbaijan’s Ecology and Natural Resources Ministry, Report informs.

Verdiyev spoke about this at the event titled “The Role of Water Management Systems in Climate-Resilient Agriculture: COP29 Roundtable Discussions,” Report informs.

The deputy director emphasized that focusing solely on the Kur River in Azerbaijan would not yield significant results. Instead, he called for the development of scenarios for transboundary rivers within the framework of COP29.

"We want water scenarios to be developed and regional countries to implement joint measures within the framework of adaptation plans.

With the support of the Green Climate Fund and other organizations, we can increase the sustainability of our water resources in the face of future climate changes by implementing adaptation activities," he stated.

Verdiyev noted, sea levels are rising in the North, and ice is melting in the oceans:

“It is suggested that this issue be included in the climate change mechanisms. But in our arid regions, the opposite is happening. Closed water basins tend to dry up due to the decrease of precipitation and river flow.”
