European Commission warns Georgia: ‘foreign agents’ bill is unacceptable

The draft law on "foreign agents" is unacceptable and will be an obstacle for Georgia's EU membership, but there is still time to change the situation, European Commission Director General for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Negotiations, Gert Jan Koopman, said at the meeting with Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze in Tbilisi, Report informs.

According to him, there are concerning amendments in the legislation, and the bill adopted in the second reading in this form is unacceptable and will create serious barriers to joining the EU.

“We will finalize our recommendations in September and present our report in October and November. Therefore, there is still time. But the decision is up to the government," Koopman said.
