31 MEPs call on Borrell to suspend Georgia's candidate status

Thirty-one members of the European Parliament (EP) call on the Vice-President of the European Commission and head of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell, to suspend Georgia’s status as a candidate for accession to the EU, MEP Petras Austrevičius published the corresponding letter on social networks, Report informs via Georgian media.

“The ongoing undemocratic actions of the Georgian authorities, in particular, their aggressiveness in adopting a draft law on foreign agents ‘on the Russian model’, suppressing peaceful demonstrators and using force against them, has crossed the line,” the letter says.

It says this behavior has further exacerbated tensions and polarization in Georgian politics and society, contrary to the nine steps the Georgian government had pledged to follow.

“The behavior of the Georgian government and the leading Georgian Dream party is contrary to the obligations of an EU candidate country. Accordingly, Georgia’s candidate status should be terminated without further progress towards accession,” the statement said.
