The Secretary General of the World Muslim Communities Council, Mohammed Bechari, has described Islamophobia as an ideological tragedy that is increasingly evident in political rhetoric today, Report informs.

Bechari’s comments were made during his address at the international conference themed “Embracing Diversity: Tackling Islamophobia in 2024” held in Baku, specifically at the plenary session titled “Calling for Global Dialogue to Promote Tolerance, Peace and Respect for Human Rights and Religious Diversity.”

Bechari criticized the ineffectiveness of current measures against Islamophobia and xenophobia, proposing several actions to combat the issue.

He suggested that the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) should implement laws against religious discrimination in member countries, treating such discrimination as a criminal offense.

Additionally, he recommended the creation of educational materials to foster an accurate understanding of Islam and the development of initiatives to enhance dialogue and cooperation among different religious communities.

Bechari commended Azerbaijan for its efforts to address Islamophobia and for consistently highlighting the issue.
