Prosecutor General's Office: Work to identify sites of mass graves proceeds in several directions

Work to establish the burial places of persons missing during the first Karabakh war is being carried out in several directions, head of the criminalistics department of the Prosecutor General's Office, Orkhan Rzayev, said at today's briefing, according to Report.

He said one of the directions is the personal identification based on the results of examination of genetic samples from the graves of unknown martyrs.

"In other cases, the information contained in the materials of the criminal case from the words of witnesses is checked. Places of probable burial of bodies are inspected, and, if human remains are identified, a genetic examination is carried out. As an example, we can show the discovery of the remains of 12 people in the village of Bashlybel, Kalbajar district," he said.

In addition, according to Rzayev, human remains can be discovered during restoration work in the territories liberated from occupation, citing an example of the identification of mass graves in the Khojaly district in February, March and April 2024.

Rzayev emphasized that another direction is to identify places of mass graves based on information from the operational authorities of Azerbaijan.
