Ombudsperson appeals to int’l organizations over another provocation by Armenia

Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) of Azerbaijan Sabina Aliyeva has appealed to international organizations in connection with another armed provocation by Armenia, Report informs.

“The military provocations of Armenia directed against Azerbaijan continue, contrary to the norms of international humanitarian law and threatening peace in the region.

A clear example of Armenia’s disinterest is the shelling of the Lachin state border checkpoint from the territory of Armenia on June 15, 2023, as a result of which a serviceman of the State Border Service was wounded,” reads the appeal.

“As is known, on April 23, 2023, on the Azerbaijani-Armenian border on the Hakari River in the territory of the Lachin district, the Lachin border checkpoint was installed, during the operation of which the safe movement of vehicles and Azerbaijani citizens of Armenian nationality living in the Karabakh economic zone is ensured.

The shelling of this checkpoint used for humanitarian purposes should be regarded not only as a threat to the life and health of the military personnel serving there, who use the checkpoint of the civilian population, but also as an obstacle to the process of establishing peace in the region and an encroachment on the territorial integrity of the Azerbaijani state.

As the Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsperson) of Azerbaijan, I strongly condemn this military provocation, which is a gross violation of international law and international humanitarian law, and call on international organizations operating in the field of human rights, ombudsman institutions and national human rights institutions to take a categorical position to contain Armenia from similar actions that threaten peace and development in the region.”
