UN secretary general to visit Uzbekistan and other countries of Central Asia

UN secretary-general António Guterres will visit Central Asia between June 29 and July 7, with the first stop in Uzbekistan, his spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said, Report informs referring to Gazeta.uz.

After Uzbekistan, the head of the UN will travel to Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan. António Guterres visited the region in 2017.

During the visit, the UN secretary-general will hold meetings with each country’s heads of states and other senior government officials, spokesperson said at a briefing in New York.

Additionally, he will visit projects related to climate change and engage local communities and youth activists.

António Guterres will speak at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Astana on 4 July. In his speech, he is going to “highlight the need to reaffirm our common commitment to multilateralism based on the UN Charter, international law, and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, noting that the central goal of our multilateral system must be peace.”

“He is also expected to underscore that today’s deep global divisions are preventing countries from coming together to resolve the two serious threats emerging from climate change and digital technologies,” according to the spokesperson.
