Turkey considering appeals for opening Istanbul-Yerevan flights

Ankara is considering appeals from Turkish and Armenian airlines regarding the opening of Istanbul-Yerevan-Istanbul flights, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu told reporters following his visit to the UAE, Report informs referring to Anadolu Agency.

He said that the applications of airlines are considered by the Turkish Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation. “In principle, the attitude of the Turkish side to the issue is positive. In the coming days, it will be clear which companies will be able to fly on this route,” Cavusoglu said.

The minister reminded that after the 44-day war in Karabakh, Turkey and Azerbaijan made positive messages regarding Armenia. “Of particular importance are the calls of Baku to conclude a comprehensive peace agreement with Yerevan. These signals also demonstrate Turkey and Azerbaijan's approaches to the issue,” Cavusoglu said.

He stressed that Turkey stands for peace, stability and economic development in the South Caucasus.

Cavusoglu expressed hope that the Armenian side will make efforts to ensure long-term peace and stability in the region.

“Our intentions are extremely open. Azerbaijan had the only goal to return the country's historical lands occupied by Armenia. As a result, it is Baku that calls for a peace treaty, which means that Azerbaijan is also extremely constructive,” the Turkish minister said.

Earlier it was reported that Turkey and Armenia may appoint special representatives to normalize relations between the two countries.
