Serdar Berdimuhamedov, the 40-year-old son of the incumbent head of state Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, has been elected the new president of Turkmenistan, Report informs.

According to the Central Election Commission of Turkmenistan, Serdar Berdimuhamedov won 72.97% of the vote in the election.

In the presidential election held on March 12, 3,362,052 or 97.17% of the 3,460,080 registered voters participated in the voting.

Nine candidates were running for president in the Central Asian country.
