Peskov: Russia to welcome independent efforts by Yerevan, Baku to normalize relations

Russia is ready to assist in normalization between Armenia and Azerbaijan, but will also welcome independent efforts of the two sides, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, Report informs referring to Russian media.

He was commenting on the statement by Armenian Parliament Speaker Alen Simonyan that Yerevan is unlikely to agree to Moscow's mediation in this matter.

"While maintaining our readiness to provide any possible assistance, we will welcome independent efforts. The main thing is that the South Caucasus region remains predictable and that it truly becomes a territory of prosperity and cooperation," he said.

"At various levels from Yerevan, we have heard statements that there is essentially no need for mediators. Both Yerevan and Baku are already capable of continuing negotiations on their own until the finalization of this process," Peskov noted. "While maintaining our readiness to provide any possible assistance, we will welcome their independent efforts."
