The head of Iran's Health Ministry's Public Relations Office said on Wednesday that, 76,389 people have been infected with the coronavirus, 4,777 of whom have lost their lives.

Kianoush Jahanpour said that 1,512 new cases of infection have been detected since yesterday, Report says citing IRNA.

As many as 94 people have lost their lives in the past 24 hours, he said.

The Iranian official pointed out that 3,643 people are in critical condition.

The novel coronavirus (COVID-19) emerged in late 2019 in China's Hubei province, and the virus has spread to 210 countries and territories since then.

To date, COVID-19 cases surpassed 2,000,000 globally, resulting in more than 480,000 recoveries and over 120,000 deaths.

On February 11, the WHO officially named the 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) as COVID-19, and on March 11, declared it a pandemic.
