Family involved in Ukraine’s defense: We want to see our country free

A month has passed since the start of Russia’s war on the territory of Ukraine. Civilians also participate in the defense of Ukraine, along with the servicemen. The Vasylchenko family is among those who stood up to defend their native land.

An employee of the Eastern Europe bureau of Report has talked to the Vasylchenko family, which takes part in the defense of Kyiv.

During the conversation, it became known that the city resident Oleksandr Vasylchenko and his wife Daryna Vasylchenko were engaged in their professional activities before the war.

From the first day of the war, the couple, who is originally from Kyiv, took up arms, defending the country. The couple joined the defense of their hometown and took an active part in the battles.

Daryna had also liquidated the enemy’s manpower.

Oleksandr says that he also fought in 2014: “At that time, there was mobilization, I was drafted into the army for a year, and then I returned to Kyiv. Now that the war has come to my city, I took up arms again. I no longer protect Luhansk region, but my city. I want to see my country free. This time my wife and I are defending our city.”

Oleksandr, who has been married for three years, said they have a child and are protecting their baby by joining the war.

Daryna stressed that she couldn’t sit still when the war broke out: “My husband and I joined the defense of our country. Because I feel this power in myself. We are in a very positive mood, we believe in victory. I think we need some time to expel the Russians from our country. Because we have everything for that, the main thing is enthusiasm. I think we will succeed in everything.”
