Expert: EU mission in Armenia won't resolve any issues of Baku-Yerevan normalization

The long-term civilian mission of the European Union in Armenia won't resolve any issues of the Baku-Yerevan normalization, Director of the Georgian Caucasus Center for Islamic Studies Shota Apkhaidze told Report.

According to him, this mission is formal and will in no way affect the achievement of any results on the normalization of relations between the parties.

"The same commission works in Georgia. They monitor the conflict zone, but in fact nothing is being solved. These problems have not been resolved in our country to this day," he said.

Apkhaidze added that though many years have passed since the war in Georgia in 2008, "today there are Russian bases in the occupied territories of the country, but the Europeans and Americans have not been able to solve anything."

In addition, according to the expert, what attitude this mission will show to Azerbaijan is unknown yet.

"Perhaps they will engage in anti-Azerbaijani activities, denigrate Azerbaijan or Turkiye. This threat is always present in Western missions. But the fact is that they will not solve any problems regarding Armenian-Azerbaijani relations," he concluded.
