Armenia takes steps to please the West and, as a result, it harms Russia's national interests, Aleksandr Perenciyev, associate professor of political science and sociology department of the Plekhanov Russian University of Economics, member of the Council of Experts of Russian Officers public organization, told Report.
“This is understood in Armenia. However, it seems that they make a choice considering that Moscow does not sufficiently protect Yerevan's interests. There are many different points here. It is likely that Armenia has come to the decision that Russia has weakened as a result of a special military operation and the pressure of sanctions,” he said.
Perenciyev noted that Yerevan hopes for the protection of the West: "The current leadership of Armenia believed that it is better to strengthen itself in the Western world and do everything to please it."
The expert also emphasized that Armenia is a historical project of the Russian Empire: "Armenia was created as an outpost in the Caucasus by the Russian Empire in the 19th century as a historical and political project. This political project was initially anti-Ottoman and anti-Persian. Now, of course, this has lost its meaning."
