COVID-19 cases top 2,500 in Uzbekistan

Over the past 24 hours, Uzbekistan confirmed 21 new coronavirus cases, raising the tally to 2,568 as of May 13, according to the Health Ministry.

The country’s death toll stands at 10, while as many as 2,010 patients recovered from the disease.

Recently, Uzbekistan extended quarantine until May 10.

The first case of coronavirus infection in Uzbekistan detected on March 15 in the laboratory of the Research Institute of Virology; it was an Uzbek woman who returned from France. The Ministry of Health later announced that her son, daughter, husband, and grandson also tested coronavirus-positive.

The novel coronavirus (COVID-19) emerged in late 2019 in China’s Hubei province, and the virus has spread to 212 countries and territories since then.

To date, COVID-19 cases surpassed 4,342,000 globally, resulting in more than 1,600,000 recoveries and over 292,000 deaths.

On February 11, the WHO officially named the 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) as COVID-19, and on March 11, declared it a pandemic.
