At least 251 executed in Iran this year

“The Iranian authorities have embarked on an execution spree, killing at least 251 people between 1 January and 30 June 2022,” says the research by the Abdorrahman Boroumand Centre for Human Rights in Iran and Amnesty International, Report informs.

The organizations warned that if executions continue at this horrifying pace, they will soon surpass the total of 314 executions recorded for the whole of 2021.

According to the research, at least 86 others were executed for drug-related offences, which should not incur the death penalty according to international law.

It was reported that the number of executions worldwide has increased compared to 2021. One of the reasons for this is the execution of death sentences in Iran.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed concern over the increase in executions in Iran since the beginning of this year.
