Armenia to see constitutional coup tomorrow

Ruling My Step faction is 'plotting constitutional coup' in Armenia, Report says, citing Aysor, a well-known Armenian lawyer Amram Makinyan wrote on his Facebook page.

The 88 MPs of the [majority] My Step faction [in the National Assembly (NA)]] will carry out a constitutional coup tomorrow, committing crimes under Article 300 (embezzlement of power) and Article 300.1 (overthrowing the legal order) of the RA Criminal Code.

So, in gross violation of the rules, the MPs of the National Assembly will adopt the draft Constitutional amendments in two readings tomorrow, terminating the powers of the Court judges.

Notably, this is the same draft that was severely criticized last Friday by the Venice Commission.

According to our information, the My Step faction has already reached an agreement with RA President Armen Sarkissian. According to that agreement, Armen Sarkissian will not dispute the constitutionality of the mentioned process, but he will not sign the corresponding draft. After that, the relevant amendment will be signed by NA President Ararat Mirzoyan.
