The shallowing of the Caspian Sea may lead to the formation of new sources of dust and salt pollution in the region, stated senior researcher at the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS) Elnur Safarov, speaking at an event on the topic "Clean Air and Green Infrastructure for Sustainable Cities" within the framework of WUF13 in Baku, Report informs.
According to him, under conditions of warming and increased evaporation, the northern part of the Caspian Sea may turn into a salt flat and dusty zone.
"In a few decades, the northern part of the Caspian Sea may become a salt flat and dusty expanse," he said.
Safarov noted that this will create additional risks for public health and agriculture.
