WHO: Over 4M people contracted COVID worldwide over past week

More than 4 million people have contracted coronavirus infection in the world over the past week, and more than 64,000 have died, Report informs referring to the World Health Organization (WHO).

The number of new infections in seven days was 3 percent higher than in the previous week, and the death rate was reduced by 8 percent.

From July 26 to August 1, as many as 4,033,836 infected people were identified worldwide, and 64,216 deaths were recorded. As of August 1, there were a total of 197,788,117 cases of infection. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 4,219,578 people have died.

The incidence rose particularly strongly over the week in the Eastern Mediterranean (up 37 percent) and the Western Pacific (up 33 percent). At the same time, its decline was recorded in Europe (by 9 percent), in the Americas (by 3 percent), and also in Africa (by 1 percent). Mortality increased significantly in the Western Pacific (48 percent) and the Eastern Mediterranean (31 percent). At the same time, a significant decrease in the number of deaths was noted in the Americas (by 29 percent).

In Europe, over 1 million people were infected in seven days, and more than 8,000 people died. In the Americas, more than 1.2 million new infections and more than 20,000 deaths have been recorded. In Southeast Asia, doctors identified over 840,000 infected, and more than 22,000 people died. The largest number of people infected in a week accounted for the US (543,420). This is followed by India (283,923), Indonesia (273,891), Brazil (247,830), and Iran (206,722).
