Unvaccinated seniors to be fined in Greece

From January 16, people over 60 who are not vaccinated against coronavirus will be fined in Greece, Report informs.

Unvaccinated seniors will be fined 100 euros a month.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis attributed the move to a sharp rise in COVID incidence in the country following the discovery of the first cases of the omicron strain. According to Mitsotakis, the majority of those hospitalized in Greece and who died of coronavirus are citizens over 60 years of age.

“This is not a punishment. I would say that this is the price of health. A cautious stimulus is an impulse of life, but I believe that it is also an act of justice for most people who are vaccinated. My decision is not a punishment but a defense,” the prime minister said.

Greek government spokesman Yiannis Ikonomou said the state would not delay the imposition of the fine.
