UN suspends Hormuz evacuation operations after attack on cargo vessel

The United Nations' International Maritime Organization (IMO) has suspended its operation to evacuate seafarers from the Strait of Hormuz.

According to Report, the organization's press service said the decision was taken following an attack on a vessel in the Gulf of Oman.

"Following the successful evacuation of several ships by IMO, I have decided to temporarily suspend this process in order to confirm that the necessary security guarantees remain in place for the vessels on our evacuation list and for all ships operating in the region," IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez said in a statement.

He clarified that the vessel attacked in the Gulf of Oman, which had passed through the Strait of Hormuz, was not included on the evacuation list.

"I have always emphasized that the safety of seafarers remains the top priority. It is essential to ensure conditions that allow the evacuation of thousands of seafarers stranded in the Persian Gulf to continue without the risk of them becoming collateral victims of this geopolitical conflict," Dominguez concluded.
