UN says lack of funds for humanitarian needs in Afghanistan

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said relief operations in Afghanistan are facing an acute shortage of funds, Report informs referring to foreign media.

More than half a year later, a call for $3.2 billion from donors to help more than 21 million Afghans is “less than 25% funded.” OCHA is also said to be facing a critical funding gap of $1.3 billion.

Earlier, the UN Coordination Center reported that poor countries received only 10% of corn and 40% of wheat as part of the grain deal, most of which was sent to rich countries.

During the year, low-income countries such as Afghanistan, Ethiopia, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen received 822,000 tons of more than 33 million tons from the deal, according to the UN.
