Trinidad and Tobago declares state of emergency amid surge in COVID-19 infections

The Government of Trinidad and Tobago has declared a state of emergency on Saturday due to the continuing increase in coronavirus incidence and mortality, Report informs.

EFE News reported, citing the country’s Prime Minister Keith Rowley, that the island nation has also imposed a curfew.

The prime minister noted that his country is going through a very difficult situation. He clarified that the emergency regime comes into force at midnight from Saturday to Sunday, the curfew will remain from 21:00 to 05:00 local time.

Rowley recalled that, under the laws of the country, the emergency regime can be applied for 90 days with the possibility of further extension. He urged the population not to leave their homes without a serious reason. The prime minister noted that service stations, pharmacies, and supermarkets will continue to work, but other services and institutions that are not of primary importance will be closed.

The prime minister noted that his country sees about 20 COVID-related deaths every day. Currently, the Caribbean state with a population of 1.4 million people, has 5,558 infected with COVID-19. To date, 15,379 citizens of the country have contracted the virus since the beginning of the pandemic, and the death toll has reached 276.
