The initiative, presented by the Spanish Socialist Labor Party, was supported by 202 out of 350 parliamentarians. It is expected to enter into force in three months.
The law will regulate the right to euthanasia for people who are terminally ill or suffering from a serious, chronic and disabling illness.
According to the initiative, an adult citizen of Spain or those having a residence permit can request euthanasia. This decision should be made only by the patient himself, and he will have to confirm his desire at least four times during the process of considering the request. Moreover, a person will be able to withdraw their application or ask for an extension at any time. The request will be evaluated by doctors and a special commission that monitors compliance with the law.
Spain becomes the fourth country in Europe to allow euthanasia.
