Spanish tax authorities are investigating Juan Carlos I because of the expenses of hunting, where he was invited after he abdicated in 2014, Report informs citing El Mundo newspaper.
The Spanish tax office is asking the honorary king to justify who paid the costs associated with hunting. Over the past year, the Department of Financial and Tax Inspection sent several requests to the ex-head of state for information.
In particular, Juan Carlos I is asked to clarify the origin of the funds from which the flights and other expenses were paid during the hunts to which he was invited between 2014 and 2018. As part of this investigation, the authorities also want to know about some of the gifts that the former head of state received.
In August 2020, it became officially known that Juan Carlos I informed his son, King Philip VI, about the decision to leave the country amid the scandals associated with it. Since then he has been living in the UAE. In Spain, the 84-year-old honorary monarch has been subject to several investigations without any charges being brought against him. In early March, the Spanish prosecutor's office announced the closure of investigative actions.
