Port-Al-Prince, Haiti – Haitian authorities had arrested a senior official who served as a coordinator of general security when President Gionel Meise was assassinated, his lawyer said Monday.
Jean Lagel Citizen has joined more than two dozen suspects arrested by the Haitian National Police during an investigation into the July 7 attack on Mois’s private home.
Civil lawyer Reynald Georges called his client’s arrest politically motivated. It was not immediately clear whether the Citizens were accused of anything.
At the time of his arrest, Civil had already been placed in solitary confinement under orders from judicial authorities, along with others responsible for the president’s security.
Civil’s arrest came on the same day that Haitian authorities announced that they had issued an arrest warrant for a member of the country’s highest court in the ongoing investigation into who killed Moïse.
Maiz was shot several times during the July 7 attack, in which his wife was seriously injured. At least 26 people have been arrested, including 18 former Colombian service members. Police are still searching for various suspects, including a former rebel leader and a former Haitian senator. On Monday, they identified another suspect: Haitian Supreme Court Judge Windel Kok Telo.
