A Pentagon spokesperson has said that both al-Qaeda and Isis have a "presence" in Afghanistan.
John Kirby told reporters that the Pentagon "doesn't know an exact figure" for how many members of the terrorist organizations are present in the country. However, he said he does not believe it to be "exorbitantly high".
The United States is concerned about reports of violence against Americans in Afghanistan. US officials have told the Taliban that this is unacceptable.
