Isaac Herzog has been elected the 11th president of Israel in a secret ballot at a plenary meeting of the Knesset, Report informs referring to Israeli media.
Two candidates ran for the presidency. These were the head of The Jewish Agency for Israel Isaac Herzog and Miriam Peretz - the second female presidential candidate in the country’s history to be awarded the prestigious Israel Prize in 2018.
The term of office of the incumbent President Reuven Rivlin expires on July 9.
