Media: China trying to stop negotiations on Ukraine at G20 summit

Chinese leaders and diplomats are making efforts to prevent discussion of the situation around Ukraine at this year's G20 summit in Bali.

Report informs citing the South China Morning Post that China claims that this summit is a platform to address the major economic problems facing the world after the pandemic, and it should stick to its core mission and not be hijacked by the West's agenda.

For example, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi launched the effort in a phone call with his Indonesian counterpart, Retno Marsudi, on Monday, when he stressed that the G20 should be "the main forum for international economic cooperation". In this regard, it is noted that Indonesia holds similar views.

Also, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said that the G20 "is not a suitable platform to discuss political security issues such as Ukraine".

Observers say such attempts to avoid the issue, which have led to a diplomatic embarrassment for Beijing, are largely driven by China's desire to avoid potential disruptions at home and abroad ahead of a leadership reshuffle later this year.

At the same time, it is noted that the agenda of the summit is still being finalized, and observers say it is too early to determine whether Beijing's efforts will succeed.
