Lithuanian president nominates new prime minister

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda has signed a decree nominating Ingrida Šimonytė for the position of Prime Minister.
According to the Constitution, the government returns its powers to the newly elected president of the republic after taking office. The president of the republic must submit a candidate for prime minister to the Seimas within 15 days.
After the Seimas approves the prime minister, the president of the republic appoints the prime minister and tasks him with forming a government.
The composition of the government is also approved by decree of the president of the republic.
Nausėda won the May presidential election, defeating Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė in the second round. He will serve as president until 2029.
