Lithuania plans to introduce universal conscription by 2030

Lithuania plans to introduce universal compulsory military service by 2030.

According to Report, citing LRT, Marius Česnulevičius, national security adviser to the Lithuanian president, made the statement following a general defense forum.

He said the National Coordination Council for General Defense, headed by the country's president, plans to propose that the State Defense Council instruct the Defense Ministry and the Lithuanian Armed Forces to assess in the coming months whether the transition to universal conscription can be accelerated.

The transition to a largely universal conscription system is currently planned for around 2035.

Česnulevičius noted that a decision on whether universal conscription could be introduced by 2030 may be made by the end of 2026.
