Latvia to terminate cross-border cooperation agreement with Belarus

The Latvian authorities are planning to terminate the cross-border cooperation agreement with Belarus, Report informs via Delfi.

Latvia has made the decision due to Minsk's support for the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Riga is going to terminate the agreement that has been in force between the two states since 1998. The document's primary purpose was to promote cross-border cooperation between the local authorities of Latvia and Belarus. From the point of view of the Latvian leadership, the elimination of this agreement will become part of the "countermeasures to deter aggression."

The document itself envisages automatic renewal every five years and is currently valid until July 9, 2023. According to Delfi, the Ministry of Natural Resources of Latvia proposes to suspend the agreements unilaterally.
