Kyrgyzstan elected UN Security Council member for first time

Kyrgyzstan has been elected a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the first time in its history.

Report informs, citing Russian media, that the General Assembly voted to include the country in the Security Council for 2027-2028.

In the last of four rounds, 142 countries voted for Kyrgyzstan, while the Philippines received only 49 votes.

Starting January 1, 2027, Austria, Zimbabwe, Portugal, and Trinidad and Tobago will also join the Security Council as non-permanent members. They will replace Greece, Denmark, Pakistan, Panama and Somalia, whose terms on the council expire on December 31, 2026.
