Kanaks of New Caledonia demand referendum for independence, oppose French colonialism

Residents of New Caledonia, an overseas territory of France, oppose neo-colonialism, dependence on the metropolis and fight for a free future for the indigenous people - the Kanaks, Report informs.

At a large rally, participants demanded the cancellation of the results of what they consider to be an illegitimate referendum on December 12, 2021, and the holding of a new one.

Participants chanted slogans against France’s colonial policies in these territories and demanding independence.

The protesters expressed dissatisfaction with the imposition of the final status of New Caledonia after the referendum, and advocated the abolition of the militarization of their country by France. Among the demands was also the protection of local labor resources.

At the protest against French neo-colonialism in New Caledonia, along with Kanak flags, there were also Azerbaijani ones as a sign of Azerbaijan’s support for the Kanak position within its chairmanship of the Non-Aligned Movement.

The demonstrators explained this by saying that “Azerbaijan is always close to them and supports their fight against neo-colonialism.”

On November 21, the Baku Initiative Group of the Non-Aligned Movement organized a conference in the capital of Azerbaijan on the topic “Decolonization: Women’s Empowerment and Development.”

President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, addressing the conference participants, noted that Azerbaijan, as the chair of the Non-Aligned Movement, supports peoples fighting colonialism and striving for freedom.
