Houston declares May 28 “Azerbaijan Independence Day”

The fourth biggest city of Houston, Texas, has declared May 28 “Azerbaijan Independence Day”, Irada Akhundova, president of the Houston Baku Sister City Association, told the local Bureau of Report.

She said Mayor Sylvester Turner has signed a statement to that effect.

The document notes that in 1976 the cities of Houston and Baku became sister cities and established social, professional, educational and cultural relations, and that both cities were connected by oil and had common ground with each other.

The declaration also spoke about the history of Azerbaijan’s independence, and the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic was presented as the first example of a democratic, legal and secular state in the entire East.

The document also highlights the active work of the Azerbaijani community in Houston, Texas, and notes their contribution to the US in various fields.
