Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi has proposed to the UN Security Council the creation of a nuclear safety and security protection zone at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, which has been captured by the Russian military.
He said he addressed the UNSC and launched a proposal to create a Nuclear Safety and Security Protection Zone (NSSPZ) in Zaporizhzhia.
"This is based on the findings from our mission to the power plant there, outlined in our new report.
"The current situation is untenable and the best action to ensure the safety and security of Ukraine’s nuclear facilities and its people would be for this armed conflict to end now.
"Till that happens, urgent interim measures are needed to prevent a nuclear accident caused by military means. This can be achieved by the immediate establishment of a protection zone. We are ready to start immediately the consultations leading to the establishment of a NSSPZ."
