The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Germany increased by 31,849 to 1,866,887, data from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) for infectious diseases showed on Friday. The reported death toll rose by 1,188 to 38,795, the tally showed.
Germany entered a hard lockdown on December 16 last year, closing schools and non-essential businesses in an attempt to stop a sharp rise in Covid-19 infections.
The measures will be in place until January 10.
Only important businesses, such as supermarkets and banks, will be allowed to remain open.
Companies are being urged to allow employees to work from home.
