German FM: Peace on Russia's terms can lead to another war

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock believes that peace on Russia's terms following the war against Ukraine wouldn't bring security to either Ukraine or Europe. And it would be an invitation to another war.

Baerbock made the remarks in an interview with Bild am Sonntag, a German newspaper.

According to her, a ceasefire in Ukraine could be the first step toward a peaceful settlement.

"We are clear that sanctions can only be lifted if Russia withdraws its troops. Peace on terms dictated by Russia will not bring security to either Ukraine or us in Europe. At worst, it will be an invitation to the next war - even closer to our borders," Baerbock noted.

She stressed that partners should help strengthen Ukraine so that Kyiv can also decide on what conditions peace will be concluded.

"Because it is the Ukrainians who are dying in this war and it is they who are threatened by oppression and tyranny under Russian occupation. Nobody has the right to dictate to them," the minister added.
