Frontex: Migrant arrivals on Mediterranean routes down 37%

The number of migrants arriving in the European Union via all Mediterranean routes fell by 37% in the first half of 2026, Report informs via Corriere della Sera.

The newspaper cited data from the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, Frontex.

According to the agency, migrant flows to Spain fell by 67% to just over 10,000 people, while arrivals in Italy dropped by 55% to more than 14,000. The number of people arriving in Greece by sea declined by 29% to 16,600.

In addition, the number of migrants crossing the border via the land Balkan route decreased by 24%. Fewer than 4,000 people have arrived in the EU through this route since the beginning of the year.

At the same time, according to the International Organization for Migration, Mediterranean routes remain extremely dangerous. Around 1,300 people have died since the beginning of the year while trying to reach Europe by sea.

Earlier, EU interior ministers held an emergency video conference at Italy's initiative over the migration crisis in Ceuta.
