Floods leave at least 75 people dead in Nigeria

At least 75 deaths have been reported after floods wreaked havoc across 255 communities in Nigeria's northern state of Yobe, a local relief agency official said Wednesday.

Report informs, citing Xinhua, that the deaths were recorded from the beginning of the rainy season in May, as a direct consequence of windstorms and floods in the state, Mohammed Goje, head of the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency, told reporters in the city of Damaturu, the state's capital.

Goje said the number of deaths so far recorded also included 11 from two boat mishaps. Over 200 also sustained injuries from the incidents.

As of Sunday, over 31,000 households had been affected by floods across 255 communities from 17 local government areas of the state, the official said. Those in flood-prone areas and along waterways had been the hardest hit by the floods.
